Football debased by barbaric and primitive biting of another player by Liverpool’s Suarez

In today’s, 21st April, English premier league football match between Liverpool and Chelsea, Luis Suarez of Liverpool actually bit the arm of Branislav Ivanovic of Chelsea. He held Ivanovic’s arm almost thoughtfully before he bit it. This is clinically mad and dangerous behaviour.

Suarez has since made contact with Ivanovic by phone and has offered an apology which has apparently been accepted.

The player has also publicly apologised to his manager, his team mates and Liverpool football club’s fans.

None of this should have any impact whatever on the way the Police and the Football Association deal with so barbaric an offence.

We purport to be a civilised nation. This behaviour could not be more primitive. It is imperative that all relevant authorities deal with this at the utmost level of severity.

Suarez has apparently bitten before – twice – once in the Dutch league and one in the English league against Patrice Evra.

There is no ‘apologising’ for this.

A substantial jail term for grievous bodily harm – with the evidence already in the public domain and recorded; followed by a ban for life from the game is the least response that can properly be made.
